Pelvic MRI: Accurate Diagnosis of Gynecologic and Oncologic Conditions

Pelvic MRI at Brigid Medical Center provides layered, high-resolution images with the option for 3D reconstruction. This allows physicians to analyze the pelvic organs in detail and detect abnormalities even when symptoms are absent.

What Does Pelvic MRI Show?

  • Uterus and endometrium;
  • Ovaries and fallopian tubes;
  • Vagina and bladder;
  • Rectum and surrounding structures;
  • Lymph nodes, blood vessels, and nerve plexuses.

Indications for Pelvic MRI

  • Suspected benign or malignant tumors;
  • Chronic pelvic pain or discomfort;
  • Evaluation of infertility or reproductive system disorders;
  • Congenital abnormalities and post-operative assessment;
  • Unclear ultrasound or laboratory findings.

Pelvic MRI for Oncology

MRI is the gold standard for differentiating between benign and malignant tumors. Benign tumors typically have smooth borders, while malignant ones often show irregular shapes and aggressive invasion into surrounding tissues.

  • Detection of early-stage cancers;
  • Assessment of tumor spread and metastasis;
  • Treatment planning and post-operative follow-up.

Preparation for the Exam

  • Avoid gas-producing foods for 2–3 days;
  • Ideally perform the scan 7–10 days after the start of menstruation;
  • Fast for 5–6 hours before the procedure;
  • Avoid clothing with metal parts and bring previous medical records.

Contraindications

  • Cardiac pacemakers;
  • Non-MRI-compatible metal implants or fragments.
