Pediatric MRI: Indications, Safety and Procedure Details

Pediatric MRI is completely safe because it does not use ionizing radiation. This non-invasive method is suitable even for newborns, providing highly detailed images of the brain, spine, and other internal organs to detect abnormalities at the earliest stages.

Is MRI Safe for Children?

Yes. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves instead of X-rays. In Brigid Medical Center, we perform MRI for children of all ages — from infants to adolescents — using high-precision Philips systems.

When is MRI Prescribed for a Child?

  • Developmental delays or behavioral changes;
  • Frequent headaches, dizziness, or fainting;
  • Vision or hearing problems;
  • Seizures, convulsions, or unexplained neurological symptoms;
  • Monitoring chronic conditions or post-operative assessment.

Is Anesthesia Required?

Children under 4 years old or those who cannot remain still for 20–30 minutes may require light sedation. This ensures the child stays calm and allows the scanner to capture clear, high-quality images.

  • Safety: Short-acting pediatric anesthesia is used under the supervision of a dedicated anesthesiologist.
  • Effect: The child wakes up quickly after the scan with no harmful effects on the nervous system.

How to Prepare Your Child

  • Remove all jewelry and metal accessories;
  • Dress the child in comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons;
  • Explain that the procedure is painless and the machine makes loud "knocking" sounds;
  • Prepare the child for the 20–45 minute duration.

At Brigid Medical Center, we ensure a gentle approach and maximum safety for our youngest patients.
