Echocardiography (EchoCG) is a modern, non-invasive method of examining the heart using ultrasound waves. This procedure allows cardiologists to observe the heart in real-time, assessing its structure, chamber sizes, muscle contractility, and blood flow.
What Does Cardiac Ultrasound Show?
- Chamber sizes: Detects dilatation (expansion) or hypertrophy (thickening) of the heart walls;
- Ejection Fraction (EF): A vital indicator of pumping efficiency (normal is 55–70%);
- Valve function: Identifies stenosis, leakage (insufficiency), or prolapse;
- Structural anomalies: Congenital defects or presence of blood clots and tumors;
- Pericardial health: Detects fluid accumulation around the heart.
Indications for Echocardiography
- Chest pain, discomfort, or a feeling of "heaviness";
- Frequent dizziness, fainting, or unexplained weakness;
- Shortness of breath during exertion or at rest;
- Arrhythmias or heart palpitations;
- High blood pressure or history of myocardial infarction;
- Preparation for major surgery or athletic clearance.
Types of EchoCG Available
- Transthoracic (TTE): The standard painless exam through the chest wall;
- Doppler Echo: Specialized assessment of blood flow speed and direction;
- Stress Echo: Performed under physical load to find hidden coronary issues.
Simple Preparation
