Ultrasound of the Urinary System
Ultrasound of the urinary system is a safe, non-invasive and highly informative diagnostic method. It does not expose the patient to radiation and is therefore suitable for adults, elderly patients and children. In our clinic, examinations are performed using a modern high-resolution ultrasound scanner, which ensures accurate detection of structural and functional abnormalities of the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract.
What the Examination Reveals
- residual urine volume in the bladder;
- benign and malignant tumors;
- urolithiasis (kidney and bladder stones);
- inflammatory processes (cystitis, pyelonephritis);
- bladder wall thickening;
- structural abnormalities of the kidneys and ureters;
- obstruction or impaired urinary flow.
Ultrasound can be used both for primary diagnosis and for monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.
Indications for Urinary System Ultrasound
- pain in the lower abdomen;
- frequent or painful urination;
- blood or pus in urine;
- urinary retention or incontinence;
- lower back pain;
- night-time frequent urination;
- persistent swelling.
The test is also recommended when abnormalities are found in urine tests or when trauma to the urinary tract is suspected.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The examination is usually performed with a full bladder. The patient should drink about 1 liter of water 1 hour before the test and refrain from urinating. The scan is typically done transabdominally (through the abdominal wall). For kidney assessment, the doctor may ask the patient to turn on their side.
Sometimes a transrectal or transvaginal probe is used (for women), depending on clinical indications. The procedure is painless and takes 15–20 minutes.
