Ultrasound of Upper Limb Arteries and Veins
Ultrasound of the arteries and veins of the upper limbs is a highly informative, safe and non-invasive diagnostic method used to assess vascular function, detect circulatory disorders and identify the causes of pain, numbness or swelling in the arms. The examination evaluates blood flow, vascular patency and structural abnormalities.
Our clinic uses advanced ultrasound equipment, allowing specialists to detect even minimal vascular disorders at early stages and accurately assess tissue perfusion.
Why the Examination Is Performed
The study helps evaluate both venous and arterial blood flow and detect:
- arterial narrowing and its severity;
- blood clots, including their size and structure;
- atherosclerotic plaque formation;
- dissection of vessel walls;
- impaired tissue perfusion;
- vascular anomalies and circulatory disorders.
The doctor may compare blood flow at rest and under stress, which improves diagnostic accuracy.
Indications for the Examination
- cold hands or sensitivity to cold;
- muscle weakness;
- numbness of the arms;
- swelling of hands or forearms;
- pain in the arms at rest;
- visible vascular “lumps” along veins;
- frequent cramps and spasms;
- a feeling of heaviness in the arms.
Additional indications include diabetes mellitus, trophic ulcers, high cholesterol, and pre- and postoperative vascular assessment.
How the Examination Is Performed
The patient exposes the arms, lies or stands, and the doctor applies a special gel before scanning with a probe. The procedure is painless, requires no preparation, and lasts 30–45 minutes.
