Ultrasound of the Joints
Joint ultrasound is a painless and safe diagnostic method that allows detailed visualization of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, synovial membranes and periarticular soft tissues. As the method uses no radiation, it is suitable for patients of all ages and has virtually no contraindications. Modern equipment used in our clinic enables early detection of degenerative, inflammatory and traumatic changes.
What Joint Ultrasound Shows
- narrowing or widening of the joint space;
- cartilage thinning and degeneration;
- bony growths and deformities;
- foreign inclusions in synovial fluid;
- uneven bone surfaces;
- ligament and tendon integrity;
- inflammatory processes in periarticular tissues.
Ultrasound may be used for initial diagnosis, monitoring treatment effectiveness or for preventive evaluation in patients at risk of joint diseases.
Indications for the Examination
- acute or chronic joint pain;
- swelling, redness and local inflammation;
- reduced joint mobility;
- suspected ligament or tendon tear;
- detectable mass or swelling;
- signs of arthritis, arthrosis and other joint diseases;
- joint injuries and trauma;
- suspected dysplasia.
Joint ultrasound may also be required in endocrine and autoimmune disorders.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The procedure takes around 30 minutes. No special preparation is needed, however performing ultrasound immediately after intra-articular injections is not recommended as it may distort results.
The patient lies or sits depending on which joint is being examined. The doctor may ask the patient to bend or straighten the joint to assess structures from different angles. Results are prepared within 15–20 minutes after the examination.
