Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy

An ultrasound-guided biopsy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure in which a tissue sample is collected for histological or cytological examination. The ultrasound image ensures precise needle positioning, allowing the doctor to safely reach the lesion, avoid major vessels and nerves, and obtain the most representative sample.

The procedure is performed by experienced specialists using modern equipment, which minimizes the risk of complications and ensures accurate diagnostic results.

What Makes This Procedure Unique?

Using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance allows the doctor to:

  • determine the exact location and depth of the lesion;
  • precisely control needle movement in real time;
  • avoid blood vessels, nerves and vital structures;
  • reduce trauma and minimize complications;
  • take samples from different areas of a tumor if needed.

The puncture heals in 2–3 days. The procedure typically lasts 15–20 minutes and is much safer compared to a blind biopsy.

Which Organs Can Be Biopsied Under Ultrasound Guidance?

  • mammary glands;
  • liver;
  • prostate;
  • thyroid gland;
  • testicles;
  • soft tissues;
  • lymph nodes and others.

Indications for the Procedure

  • suspicion of malignant tumors;
  • presence of fluid in joints, abdominal cavity or pleura;
  • liver or kidney dysfunction;
  • gastrointestinal conditions that may lead to tumors.

Biopsy is the only method that allows doctors to diagnose cancer with absolute certainty, since histological examination reveals the type of pathological cells.

How the Biopsy Is Performed

Local anesthesia is applied. While it takes effect, the doctor performs an ultrasound scan to assess the lesion. A thin needle is inserted through a small puncture, and the tissue sample is collected under continuous ultrasound control.

The puncture area is disinfected, and the patient may need to stay under observation for a short period depending on the biopsy site.

Results are usually available within a few days after laboratory examination.

Types of Ultrasound-Guided Biopsies

  1. Fine-needle vacuum biopsy — tissue is collected using a special vacuum syringe.
  2. Core needle (trephine) biopsy — takes a 0.5–1 cm tissue core for histology.
  3. Aspiration biopsy — combines cutting and vacuum techniques for comprehensive sampling.

Preparation

No special preparation is required, but certain medications may need to be discontinued several days before the procedure. The doctor will provide instructions individually.
