Ultrasound of the Salivary Glands

Ultrasound of the salivary glands is a non-invasive, painless and highly informative diagnostic method used to evaluate the major and minor salivary glands. It is suitable for adults and children and allows detection of inflammatory, obstructive, tumor-related and congenital abnormalities. In our clinic, examinations are performed using modern high-resolution ultrasound equipment.

What the Examination Detects

  • salivary gland stones (sialolithiasis);
  • acute and chronic inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infections;
  • benign and malignant tumors;
  • congenital and acquired developmental abnormalities;
  • duct obstruction, fibrosis and dystrophic changes.

Ultrasound is often used when other diagnostic methods fail to determine the cause of swelling, pain or salivary gland dysfunction.

Indications for Salivary Gland Ultrasound

  • enlarged salivary glands;
  • dry mouth (xerostomia);
  • palpable lumps near the salivary glands;
  • sharp pain near the ears or under the jaw;
  • local increase in skin temperature;
  • suspected tumor or lymph node enlargement.

How the Examination Is Performed

No specific preparation is required, except avoiding food for 3–4 hours before the test. The patient lies on a couch with the head slightly tilted back. The doctor may ask the patient to turn the head to either side for better visualization.

Ultrasound is performed both externally and intraorally if necessary. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes, and results are provided immediately after the scan.
