Echocardiography (Ultrasound of the Heart)

Echocardiography is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the heart that allows the physician to assess the structure and function of the myocardium, valves, chambers and blood flow. It is a painless, highly accurate and informative diagnostic method widely used for early detection of cardiac disorders. At our clinic, the examination is performed on advanced ultrasound systems providing exceptional image clarity.

What Echocardiography Helps Diagnose

  • heart chamber size and wall thickness;
  • myocardial scars and post-infarction changes;
  • condition of the pericardium;
  • valve performance and possible defects;
  • myocardial contractility assessment;
  • blood flow direction and speed;
  • vascular abnormalities and intracardiac thrombi.

Due to its high informativeness, echocardiography is essential for diagnosing ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, aneurysms and tumors.

Indications for Echocardiography

  • chest pain;
  • shortness of breath during minimal activity;
  • high blood pressure;
  • general weakness and fatigue;
  • leg swelling;
  • congenital or acquired heart defects;
  • post–myocardial infarction follow-up;
  • suspected cardiac tumors or aneurysms;
  • pre-surgical cardiac evaluation.

Regular echocardiography is recommended for athletes and individuals under high physical loads.

How the Procedure Is Performed

The patient lies on the left side, allowing optimal visualization of the heart in multiple projections. The doctor applies a special gel and examines the organ using an ultrasound probe. The procedure is completely painless and lasts around 45 minutes. Results are usually ready within 15 minutes.
