MRI of the Breast

Breast MRI is one of the most accurate and sensitive diagnostic methods for detecting malignant and benign tumors, inflammation and structural abnormalities. It allows visualizing even very small lesions that are not visible on mammography or ultrasound, and is considered the gold standard for assessing breast implants and high-risk patients.

When Is Breast MRI Recommended?

  • presence of a cyst, hematoma or palpable lump;
  • assessment of breast tissue density;
  • suspicion of malignant tumor;
  • evaluation of scar tissue after surgery;
  • enlarged lymph nodes;
  • control of breast implants (rupture, deformation, capsular contracture);
  • monitoring high-risk patients (genetic predisposition, family history);
  • clarification of unclear findings after ultrasound or mammography.

What Does Breast MRI Show?

  • malignant and benign tumors;
  • dilation or narrowing of the breast ducts;
  • integrity and condition of implants;
  • presence of metastases and enlarged lymph nodes;
  • inflammatory processes and postoperative changes.

MRI is the most sensitive imaging method for early breast cancer detection, including non-palpable tumors.

How Is the Examination Performed?

The exam is performed between days 5–12 of the menstrual cycle for maximum accuracy. Women in menopause can undergo MRI at any time.

The patient lies face down on the MRI table, with the breasts placed into dedicated openings of the breast coil. Special straps help minimize movement. The exam lasts 30–60 minutes depending on whether contrast is used.

Results are typically available within an hour.

Safety

Breast MRI is a safe, radiation-free method. It can be performed as often as needed and is recommended annually for women over 40 and high-risk groups.
