MRI of Abdominal Organs
MRI of abdominal organs is a non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic method used to assess the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, lymph nodes, blood vessels and surrounding soft tissues. High-resolution imaging allows detecting even minimal structural changes and early-stage malignancies.
When Is Abdominal MRI Recommended?
- to clarify or confirm a previously established diagnosis;
- if cancer is suspected, even at early stages;
- in case of abdominal pain when ultrasound or X-ray methods are inconclusive;
- to diagnose congenital abnormalities;
- to detect inflammation, fluid accumulation or infiltrates;
- for assessment of benign or malignant tumors;
- evaluation of blood circulation, aneurysms and thrombosis;
- preoperative planning and postoperative monitoring.
What Can the Study Detect?
- foreign bodies, traumatic injuries;
- metastases and primary malignancies;
- fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, fibrosis;
- cysts, adenomas, hemangiomas;
- pancreatic pathologies and duct dilatation;
- obstructive jaundice and biliary tract disorders;
- abdominal fluid collections or inflammatory processes.
MRI provides a 3D model of abdominal structures, which allows precise treatment planning and accurate clinical decision-making.
How Is the MRI Performed?
The procedure is painless. The patient lies still on the table while the scanner acquires images. In some cases, mild body fixation is used to prevent motion artifacts. Duration — around 30 minutes. A contrast agent may be administered intravenously if needed.
Preparation for Abdominal MRI
- avoid vegetables, fruits, dairy products, bread and carbonated drinks for 3 days;
- take Espumisan for 3 days prior to the exam;
- come strictly fasting or at least 3 hours after the last meal;
- take 2 tablets of No-Shpa or Buscopan 3 hours before the procedure;
- empty the bladder before scanning.
