MRA of Neck Arteries

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the neck arteries is a highly informative and safe diagnostic method that allows detailed visualization of the carotid, vertebral and other major vessels of the neck without radiation exposure. The technique helps detect structural abnormalities, narrowing, inflammation and vascular malformations even at early stages.

When Is MRA of Neck Arteries Recommended?

  • neck injuries or suspected vascular damage;
  • sudden fluctuations in blood pressure;
  • episodes of fainting or presyncope;
  • speech disorders or swallowing difficulties;
  • memory impairment and cognitive decline;
  • chronic insomnia;
  • double vision, darkening of vision;
  • persistent or severe headaches.

What Can the Study Detect?

  • aneurysms of neck arteries;
  • venous fusion anomalies;
  • Takayasu arteritis and other vasculitides;
  • vascular stenosis, tortuosity or abnormal positioning;
  • arterial wall dissection;
  • benign and malignant vascular tumors;
  • post-traumatic scar compression of vessels;
  • thrombophlebitis and blood flow disorders.

MRA is essential for detecting vascular risks that may lead to stroke or chronic ischemia.

How the Procedure Is Performed

No preparation is required. The patient removes all metal objects and lies motionless on the MRI table. The table moves inside the scanner ring, which rotates to acquire layer-by-layer images. Average scan duration is 30–40 minutes. For more detailed assessment, contrast may be used, extending the session to about 1 hour.
