MSCT With Contrast Enhancement

MSCT with contrast enhancement is a highly informative diagnostic method used to visualize internal organs, vessels and soft tissues with maximum clarity. While soft tissues do not retain X-rays sufficiently, the administration of an iodinated contrast agent improves visualization, making it possible to evaluate organ structure, blood flow, tumor activity, inflammatory changes and trauma consequences.

When the Examination Is Recommended

Contrast MSCT is prescribed in cases of suspected oncological or surgical pathology:

  • tumors of the brain or skull base;
  • neoplasms of abdominal organs;
  • thoracic malignancies;
  • bone and soft tissue tumors;
  • liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma;
  • lymphomas;
  • suspected vascular pathology (aneurysm, stenosis, thrombosis).

Contrast-enhanced MSCT is also used for the diagnosis of arterial narrowing, atherosclerosis, thromboembolism and postoperative evaluation.

What Contrast MSCT Shows

This method allows physicians to:

  • detect focal lesions and tumors of internal organs;
  • assess tumor resectability;
  • determine the stage of malignant disease;
  • visualize metastases;
  • evaluate vascular patency and blood flow;
  • identify inflammatory processes and complications after surgery or trauma.

How the Procedure Is Performed

A catheter is placed before the scan. Contrast material is injected automatically by a power injector during the examination. The volume of contrast (50–150 ml) is calculated individually based on the patient’s weight and the diagnostic task.

For gastrointestinal studies, oral or rectal contrast may be used. After administration, the CT scan is performed in several phases.

Iodinated contrast agents used in our clinic are safe and well-tolerated. Rarely, mild allergic reactions may occur and are easily managed with antihistamines.
