MSCT of the Thoracic Spine
Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) of the thoracic spine is a highly informative imaging method that allows accurate evaluation of the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal canal, spinal cord and surrounding soft tissues. MSCT provides superior visualization thanks to thin-layer scanning (0.5 mm slices), enabling early detection of trauma, degenerative changes, tumors and congenital abnormalities. Our clinic uses modern low-dose CT technology to ensure maximum diagnostic precision with minimal radiation exposure.
Purpose of the Examination
MSCT allows a thorough assessment of the thoracic vertebrae, ligamentous apparatus, nerve roots, vascular structures and the spinal cord. High-resolution imaging helps identify even minimal pathological changes, making MSCT indispensable for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Although MSCT can be used for primary diagnostics, it is often prescribed to clarify uncertain findings when X-ray or MRI does not provide enough information.
Indications for MSCT of the Thoracic Spine
- chronic back pain of unknown origin;
- spinal cord hemorrhages;
- posture disorders caused by deformities or trauma;
- vertebral fractures and compression injuries;
- narrowing or widening of the spinal canal (stenosis, ectasia);
- rheumatic diseases affecting the spine;
- osteoporosis and suspected compression fractures;
- degenerative spine diseases;
- congenital abnormalities of the thoracic spine;
- suspected benign or malignant tumors, metastases.
MSCT is also recommended for trauma assessment and for preoperative planning.
How the Examination Is Performed
No special preparation is required. The patient lies motionless on the CT table after removing all metal objects. The scan is painless and lasts about 15–20 minutes, while the actual scanning process takes only a few minutes.
A 3D reconstruction is generated to provide a detailed view of the spine and surrounding tissues, enabling precise diagnosis by the radiologist.
