MSCT of the Lumbosacral Spine

MSCT of the lumbosacral spine is one of the most accurate diagnostic methods for evaluating vertebrae, discs, ligaments, the spinal canal, spinal cord and surrounding soft tissues. The method provides highly detailed cross-sectional and 3D images, allowing early detection of hernias, fractures, tumors, inflammatory disorders and degenerative diseases.

When MSCT Is Recommended

The examination is used to diagnose:

  • intervertebral herniation and protrusions;
  • osteochondrosis and spondylosis;
  • compression fractures;
  • osteoporosis and reduced bone density;
  • spinal instability;
  • spinal canal stenosis;
  • tumors of vertebrae and surrounding tissues;
  • congenital anomalies of the spine;
  • hematomas and hemorrhage into the spinal canal;
  • rheumatic and inflammatory disorders.

What the Scan Shows

MSCT provides a clear and comprehensive view of:

  • vertebrae and intervertebral joints;
  • intervertebral discs;
  • the spinal canal and meninges;
  • spinal nerves and root canals;
  • soft tissues around the spine;
  • degenerative, inflammatory, traumatic or oncologic changes.

How the Procedure Is Performed

No special preparation is required. If contrast enhancement is needed, fasting for 4 hours is recommended.

The patient lies on a movable table which passes through a rotating CT scanner ring. During scanning, it is important to remain still; in some moments, the physician may ask the patient to briefly hold their breath.

Scanning time is 10–15 seconds, while the entire procedure takes about 15 minutes. With contrast, the duration may increase.
