MSCT of the Knee Joint
Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) of the knee joint is a highly accurate diagnostic method that uses X-ray imaging combined with multi-layer scanning to obtain detailed images of the bones, joint surfaces and soft tissues. When contrast enhancement is used, MSCT provides additional visualization of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, synovial structures and vascular elements. Our clinic uses high-speed, low-dose CT systems that ensure maximum image quality with minimal radiation exposure.
Purpose of MSCT of the Knee
MSCT allows physicians to:
- assess the condition of bones, cartilage and surrounding soft tissues;
- detect cartilage damage and joint surface defects;
- identify hematomas, bleeding and intra-articular fluid accumulation;
- diagnose benign and malignant tumors;
- detect inflammatory and infectious processes;
- identify the cause of chronic pain, limited mobility or swelling;
- visualize anatomical abnormalities and congenital features;
- monitor treatment effectiveness and postoperative condition.
Indications for Knee MSCT
- complex fractures and traumatic injuries;
- suspected or confirmed meniscus damage;
- chronic or recurrent knee pain of unclear origin;
- suspected osteoporosis or reduced bone density;
- limited movement, stiffness or instability of the joint;
- preoperative planning and postoperative evaluation.
MSCT is often prescribed when other diagnostic methods (X-ray, ultrasound or MRI) do not provide enough information for an accurate diagnosis.
How MSCT of the Knee Is Performed
The examination is painless and does not require special preparation. The patient removes all metal objects and lies on the CT table. The scanner performs multi-layer imaging as its ring rotates around the joint. The system then reconstructs a detailed 3D image of the knee.
The procedure lasts about 10–15 minutes, with the scanning process taking only a few minutes. It is important to remain still to ensure high-quality images.
