MSCT of the Inner Ear
Multislice CT (MSCT) of the inner ear is a highly informative diagnostic method used in otorhinolaryngology to examine the structures of the temporal bone, cochlea, semicircular canals, auditory ossicles and surrounding soft tissues. Modern equipment used in our clinic provides extremely high spatial resolution while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum. 3D reconstruction enables early detection of even the most subtle abnormalities.
Why MSCT of the Inner Ear Is Performed
MSCT allows detailed evaluation of bone structures and soft tissues of the middle and inner ear. This method makes it possible to detect microfractures, congenital anomalies, inflammatory processes, tumors and changes causing conductive or sensorineural hearing loss.
One of the unique advantages of MSCT is the ability to determine the true origin of hearing loss — congenital or acquired — thanks to the extremely high accuracy of temporal bone reconstruction.
Indications for MSCT
The examination is recommended for the following symptoms and conditions:
- tinnitus;
- ear discomfort or pain;
- fluid or discharge from the ear;
- hearing loss or deterioration;
- dizziness and imbalance;
- coordination impairment.
MSCT is also performed when tumors, abscesses, inflammatory diseases, suspected cholesteatoma or trauma of the temporal bone are present. The scan precisely detects fractures and determines the position of bone fragments.
How the Scan Is Performed
The procedure does not require special preparation. The patient removes all metal objects and lies down on the CT table. The scanning process takes only a few minutes.
In some cases, contrast enhancement is used. Safe iodine-based contrast agents are administered intravenously to improve visualization of soft tissues and vascular structures if deeper evaluation is required.
