MSCT of the Chest

Chest MSCT is a high‑precision, informative exam that provides detailed assessment of the lungs, bronchi, heart, mediastinum, esophagus, great vessels and soft tissues. Compared with plain radiography, multi‑slice CT offers superior detail and enables timely detection of pathology. The examination is performed on CT Philips Brilliance 64.

Indications

• Infectious lung involvement.
• Suspected tumors or metastases.
• Bronchial disease.
• Thoracic aorta involvement.
• Extrapulmonary pathology.
• Enlarged lymph nodes.
• Size and localization clarification for tumors.
• Pre‑operative planning.

What does the exam show?

• Tuberculosis.
• Lung and mediastinal tumors.
• Lymphadenopathy.
• Lung abscess.
• Diaphragmatic hernia or paralysis.
• Pleural effusion/pleuritis.
• Sarcoidosis.
• Metastases.
• Mediastinal developmental anomalies.
• Parasitic lung cysts.

Preparation

• Typically no preparation; remove metal items.
• CT is permissible with implanted electronic devices.
• For planned contrast, creatinine test and physician guidance.

Procedure

• Lie on the moving table; an IV catheter is placed.
• Non‑contrast scan followed by contrast‑enhanced phases when indicated.
• Breath‑holds of 10–15 seconds on command during acquisition.
• Brief metallic taste or dizziness may occur after contrast.
• Contrast improves detail and optimizes protocols.
