MSCT of the Chest Organs

Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) of the chest is a highly accurate and informative imaging method that allows detailed assessment of the lungs, bronchi, mediastinal organs, heart, esophagus, major vessels and surrounding soft tissues. Compared with conventional X-ray imaging, MSCT provides significantly more diagnostic information, making it possible to detect serious conditions at an early stage and accurately plan treatment.

When the Examination Is Performed

  • infectious diseases of the lungs;
  • suspected tumor or metastases in the lungs or mediastinum;
  • bronchial diseases and airway obstruction;
  • thoracic aorta abnormalities or suspected aneurysm;
  • extrapulmonary thoracic conditions;
  • enlarged lymph nodes;
  • clarifying tumor size, localization and metastatic spread;
  • preoperative evaluation.

What MSCT Can Detect

  • tuberculosis;
  • tumors of the lungs and mediastinal organs;
  • lymphadenopathy;
  • lung abscess;
  • diaphragmatic paralysis or hernia;
  • pleurisy;
  • sarcoidosis;
  • metastatic disease;
  • congenital abnormalities of mediastinal structures;
  • parasitic lung cysts.

How the Procedure Is Performed

No special preparation is required. The patient must remove all metal objects. Unlike MRI, this examination can be safely performed in the presence of implanted electronic devices containing metal components.

The patient lies on a movable table. A flexible intravenous catheter is inserted, and the first scanning phase is performed without contrast. Then a second scan is performed after contrast injection.

The first phase is fully comfortable. After contrast administration, some patients may experience a metallic taste or mild dizziness — these effects are temporary.

Contrast improves image quality and reduces overall scan time, which also decreases radiation exposure.
