MSCT of the Cervical Spine

MSCT of the cervical spine is a highly informative method for visualizing the spinal cord, vertebral canal, intervertebral discs, ligaments, vessels and surrounding soft tissues. The scan provides precise, high-resolution images that help detect inflammation, tumors, degenerative changes and traumatic injuries at early stages.

When the Examination Is Recommended

  • need to clarify a diagnosis after X-ray or MRI;
  • frequent or intense headaches of unknown origin;
  • previous injuries of the cervical spine;
  • recurrent fainting;
  • systematic muscle spasms and convulsions;
  • suspected inflammatory or degenerative diseases;
  • pre-operative evaluation;
  • assessment of the vessels and soft tissues with contrast enhancement.

What MSCT Reveals

  • osteoporosis;
  • spinal canal stenosis;
  • spondylosis;
  • osteochondrosis;
  • hernias and disc protrusions;
  • fractures and cracks in cervical vertebrae;
  • tumors and their spread to surrounding tissues;
  • hemorrhage into the spinal cord;
  • congenital abnormalities;
  • myelopathy and other spinal cord disorders.

How the Procedure Is Performed

No special preparation is required, although fasting 2–4 hours before the scan is recommended. All metal objects must be removed. If contrast enhancement is needed, kidney-function tests (creatinine, urea) are required beforehand.

The patient lies on a movable table that enters the CT gantry. The head may be fixed with cushions or straps to prevent movement. MSCT without contrast takes around 5 minutes; with contrast — up to 15 minutes.
