MSCT of the Abdominal Organs
Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) of the abdominal organs is a modern high-resolution diagnostic method that provides detailed images of internal structures using X-ray scanning. Different tissues absorb radiation differently, allowing the doctor to clearly visualize the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, abdominal aorta and surrounding soft tissues. MSCT is widely used for diagnosing acute and chronic abdominal conditions, for preoperative evaluation and for monitoring treatment effectiveness.
When MSCT of the Abdomen Is Prescribed
The examination is performed in cases of:
- liver diseases, including parasitic infections;
- cirrhosis and fatty liver disease;
- hepatomegaly of any origin;
- diseases of the biliary system, pancreas and spleen;
- urolithiasis;
- tumors (benign and malignant) of abdominal organs;
- abdominal trauma;
- diseases of the abdominal aorta and its branches;
- suspected internal bleeding or organ damage;
- monitoring treatment or postoperative follow-up.
What the Scan Can Reveal
- tumors and other masses, including size and exact location;
- fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity (ascites);
- abscesses and inflammatory infiltrates;
- consequences of trauma — hematomas, ruptures, contusions;
- vascular abnormalities and aneurysms.
How MSCT of the Abdomen Is Performed
MSCT is a painless and non-invasive procedure. Some patients experience mild discomfort due to claustrophobia; in such cases, sedatives or medical sleep may be recommended.
The patient lies on a movable table that slides into the scanner. The ring-shaped gantry rotates around the area being examined, acquiring a series of thin cross-sectional images.
To improve visualization, contrast enhancement may be used. After contrast injection, some patients experience temporary dizziness, nausea or a metallic taste — these effects are usually short-lived but should be reported to the doctor.
The scan takes 10–15 minutes without contrast and 30–60 minutes when contrast is required.
